Elevating Connectivity: A Closer Look at the Upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road Project

By LODHA

December 07, 2023

Mumbai, India's financial capital, is a city that's constantly on the move. With its bustling streets, iconic landmarks, and diverse culture, Mumbai is the epitome of a thriving metropolis. However, for years there lies an ever-growing challenge - the relentless traffic gridlock. Mumbai's traffic congestion ranks among the highest globally, with commuters spending an average of 135 hours stuck in traffic each year, according to the TomTom Traffic Index. As the economic epicentre of the nation, the need for efficient transportation is more pressing than ever. To address these issues and provide a smoother commute for its residents, Mumbai has embarked on a game-changing infrastructure project: the Mumbai Coastal Road.

Beyond its practical benefits, the Mumbai Road Project aims to provide a more enjoyable and scenic commute experience. The road's alignment along Mumbai's picturesque coastline promises travellers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, a welcome departure from the usual urban congestion.

Connecting South Mumbai to the Western Suburbs

The Mumbai Road Project has been meticulously planned to address several critical challenges that have long plagued the city of Mumbai. Stretching from the southern tip of the city, South Mumbai (SoBo), to the western suburbs, this expansive coastal route is set to transform the way Mumbai's residents commute and experience the city.

One of the primary objectives of this project is to alleviate the severe traffic congestion that has become an everyday reality for Mumbaikars. The existing road network, while extensive, struggles to accommodate the ever-growing number of vehicles on the city's streets. As a result, daily commutes are often time-consuming and frustrating, with gridlock traffic becoming a common occurrence during rush hours. According to BMC estimates, the coastal road is poised to dramatically reduce travel time between Princess Street and BWSL to under 10 minutes, substantially improving from the current 35-45 minutes during peak hours.

Moreover, it aims to curtail fuel consumption by 35 percent, diminish noise and air pollution, and reduce the annual carbon footprint by 1,826 tons. Benefits of the Coastal Road Project:

-> Improves travel along Mumbai's coastline for residents and commuters
-> Eases traffic flow, particularly in densely populated areas.
-> Generates jobs and stimulates local businesses through construction and maintenance.
-> Offers picturesque views and potential recreational spaces along the coastal alignment.
-> Enhances emergency response capabilities for disaster management along the coast.
-> Reduces congestion, enhances connectivity, and creates recreational spaces for a better quality of life.

Key Details at a Glance

Project Phases: The colossal Mumbai Coastal Road is divided into two phases. Phase 1, spanning approximately 10 kilometres, connects the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to the Worli terminus of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). The Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL), also known as the Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Sea Link, is a bridge currently under construction in Mumbai which is a part of Coastal Road Phase-2.

Total Length: Upon completion, the Mumbai Coastal Road will span an impressive 29 kilometres, enhancing connectivity and alleviating traffic congestion along the city's western coast.

Mumbai Coastal Road Map: This toll-free expressway, beginning at Marine Drive, will seamlessly connect with the Bandra- Worli Sea Link (BWSL) in Worli. Additionally, the project includes the construction of two underground tunnels at Malabar Hill and Girgaum Chowpatty, promising swifter travel for Mumbaikars between South Mumbai and the distant western suburbs.

Lanes of Efficiency: This project will significantly boost Mumbai's road infrastructure, offering eight dedicated lanes. Six lanes will cater to regular vehicular traffic, ensuring smoother commutes, while two lanes will serve as a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, providing efficient public transportation.

Mumbai Coastal Road Completion Date: On March 11, 2024, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated Phase 1 of the coastal road, spanning from Worli to Marine Drive in South Mumbai.

Vehicles Allowed: Cars and buses are the only vehicles permitted on the Mumbai Coastal Road. Access is restricted for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles.

Operational Timings: The Mumbai Coastal Road will operate from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, ensuring uninterrupted maintenance work during non-operational hours.

Entry & Exit Point: The Princess Street Flyover in Marine Lines serves as the starting point, while Kandivali marks the endpoint of the journey.

Major Localities Around the Coastal Road: Nariman Point, Marine Drive, Mahalaxmi and Worli are some of the localities.

Ownership and Oversight: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is overseeing the project & execution, ensuring its successful implementation.

Consulting Expertise: The project has enlisted the services of AECOM as the general consultant. AECOM's expertise will be instrumental in guiding the project to successful completion.

Reshaping Real Estate: The Mumbai Coastal Road Project's Influence

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project will leave an indelible mark on the city's real estate landscape. This ambitious infrastructure development will not only enhance connectivity but also add significant value to properties in its vicinity. Areas along the Coastal Road route particularly in areas from South Mumbai to Kandivali have witnessed a surge in demand for residential and commercial real estate. With improved accessibility and reduced commuting times, these neighbourhoods have become highly attractive to potential buyers and investors. Moreover, the scenic beauty offered by the Coastal Road's coastal route has added a premium to properties with sea-facing views, making them highly coveted in the real estate market. As the project progresses and its benefits become increasingly evident, it is expected to continue influencing property values, urban development and investment opportunities along its path.
