Jiya Rai: Palava’s Trailblazing Champion

Seventeen-year-old Jiya Rai, a resident of Palava, has made history as the first female para-swimmer with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to successfully swim solo across the Catalina Channel in the United States. On September 26, 2025, she completed the 34 km swim in 15 hours, 1 minute, and 43 seconds, braving treacherous currents, 18°C waters, and the risk of jellyfish and other sea challenges.

This is the same Jiya who climbed Mt. Everest Base Camp at the age of 4, showcasing her fearless spirit from an early age.

Jiya dedicated her swim to autism awareness. Her father, Indian Navy sailor Madan Rai, said, “Jiya began swimming as therapy and went on to complete an epic relay from Mumbai to Goa in 2022, earning India’s highest honour for young achievers.” He added, “The channel’s dark hours are the most challenging part, with hypothermia and sea creatures posing serious risks.”

Officials noted that in the 100-year history of Catalina Channel swimming, Jiya is the first girl with ASD to achieve this feat.

Her mother, Rachana Rai, reflects, “Growing up in Palava, Jiya benefited from its accessible sports facilities, safe training spaces and a community that encourages exploration, giving her the confidence and freedom to pursue swimming at an international level.”

Super focused yet gently minimalistic, Jiya captured it beautifully in a single line:

“Action speaks louder than words.”

Her extraordinary journey is a powerful reminder of what focus, courage, and determination can achieve, inspiring not only Palava but the nation at large.
